Why Should You Take a Firearm Training Class?

Shooting is a great activity for anyone interested in trying. However, with firearms comes responsibility and using a firearm for personal defense comes with even greater responsibility. Firearm training is taking personal responsibility for your safety and the safety of those close to you. Range America is proud to offer the following classes to improve your understanding and operation of firearms:

NRA Basic Pistol Shooting Course

This course involves classroom and range time learning to shoot revolvers and semi-automatics. Students also learn rules for safe gun handling, shooting fundamentals, range rules and much more. Students receive the NRA Guide to the Basics of Pistol Shooting, NRA gun safety brochure and an NRA course completion certificate. If you desire to use this training for the KY CCDW program, you are required to obtain and adhere to the rules pertaining to KRS 237.110 training on your own. You will need to fill out the Carry Concealed Deadly Weapons Paper Application Certification on Justifiable Use of Force and complete the listed requirements. (If you are using this for the KY CCDW please note that approved material and teaching are subject to change at the discretion of the Kentucky State CCDW Program authorities.) Minimum 8 people per class.

NRA Defensive Pistol

This course focuses on the techniques needed to develop a defensive mindset, including demonstration of basic principles of concealment, differences between cover and concealment, drawing from a holster, and more. Minimum 8 people per class.

NRA Basic Rifle Shooting Course

This course includes classroom and range time learning how to shoot rifles, including rifle parts and operation, shooting fundamentals, range rules, shooting from different positions and cleaning rifles, among other topics. Students receive the NRA Basics of Rifle Shooting handbook, NRA gun safety brochure and the NRA Basic Rifle Shooting course completion certificate. Minimum 8 people per class.

NRA Basic Shotgun Shooting Course

This course includes classroom and range time learning how to shoot shotguns at moving targets, shotgun parts and operation, shell components and malfunctions, range rules, cleaning and more. Students receive the NRA Basics of Shotgun Shooting handbook, NRA gun safety brochure, and the NRA Basics of Shotgun Shooting course completion certificate. (2 day class; 2nd day is off site). Clay targets are included in the off-site portion; shotguns, ammo, transportation, hearing and eye protection are NOT included in the cost of this course). Minimum 8 people per class.

NRA Basic Personal Protection in the Home Course

This course is for experienced shooters who have completed either the NRA Basic Pistol course, NRA FIRST Steps course, NRA pistol competitive shooting qualification card, military DD 214 with pistol qualification or passing the Pre-Course Assessment. Expect to shoot 100 rounds of ammunition. Students will learn basic defensive shooting skills, strategy to home safety and responding to violent confrontation, choosing a handgun for self-defense and more. Students will receive the NRA Guide to Basics of Personal Protection in the Home handbook, NRA gun safety brochure, and the NRA Basic Personal Protection in the Home course completion certificate. Minimum 8 people per class.

NRA Basics of Personal Protection Outside the Home Course

This course is for experienced shooters who have demonstrated the defensive pistol skills presented in the NRA Basics of Personal Protection in the Home course, or by passing the pre-course evaluation. Expect to shoot at least 100 rounds of ammunition. This course offers the essential knowledge and skills that must be mastered in order to carry, store, and use a firearm safely and effectively outside the home. After completion of Level I, students may choose to attend Level II, which is an additional 5 hours on the range and 115 rounds of ammunition learning advanced shooting skills. Students will receive the NRA Guide to Basics of Personal Protection Outside the Home handbook, and the appropriate Level I/Level II course completion certificate(s). Minimum 8 people per class.

NRA FIRST Steps Pistol Orientation

This course is designed to provide a hands-on intro to the safe handling and proper orientation to one specific pistol action type. This class includes range time. Students will learn the NRA’s rules for safe gun handling, shooting fundamentals, ammunition, cleaning the pistol and more. Students will receive the Basics of Pistol Shooting handbook, NRA Gun Safety Rules brochure and the FIRST Steps Pistol course completion certificate. Minimum 6 people per class.

NRA FIRST Steps Rifle Orientation

This course provides hands-on introduction to safe handling and proper orientation one specific rifle action type. This class includes range time. Students will learn the NRA’s rules for safe gun handling, rifle model parts and operation, shooting fundamentals, cleaning the rifle and more. Students will receive the Basics of Rifle Shooting handbook, NRA Gun Safety brochure and the FIRST Steps Rifle course completion certificate. Minimum 6 people per class.

NRA FIRST Steps Shotgun Orientation

This course provides hands-on introduction to safe handling and proper orientation of one specific shotgun model at a simulated moving target. Students will learn the NRA’s rules for safe gun handling, shotgun parts and operation, shooting fundamentals, cleaning the shotgun and more. Students will receive the Basics of Shotgun Shooting handbook, NRA Gun Safety brochure and the FIRST Steps Shotgun course completion certificate. Minimum 6 people per class.

Kentucky CCDW

Carrying a firearm concealed is a great responsibility. Our state certified conceal carry class (CCDW) teaches basic knowledge, legal information and the basic skills needed to obtain a conceal carry license. You do NOT have to be a Resident of Kentucky to take this class; HOWEVER; to obtain a license a person must:

  • Be at least 21 years old
  • Be a citizen of the United States; and
  • Have been a Kentucky resident for at least the last six months before applying.

OR

  • Be a member of the Armed Forces of the United States on duty in Kentucky at least six months prior to and at the time of the application.
  • And not have felony criminal record or a dishonorable discharge from the military.

You will need to bring:

  • At least 20 rounds of ammunition, (should you not qualify on your 1st attempt [which is 20 rounds], a 2nd attempt is permitted. We suggest at least a box of 50 rounds for this class because RAFTC wants you to succeed. We can spend the time and better prepare you if you have enough ammunition. Ammo MUST be factory grade; reloads are Not Permitted (see other rules for ammunition).
  • Hearing and eye protection.
  • A Cleaning Kit that is appropriate for your handgun.
  • A handgun that is in good working order and passes inspection by the certified instructor.

If you do not have the appropriate equipment, it is available at RAFTC. Additionally, if you are a perspective first-time gun buyer, RAFTC has handgun rentals available. This will allow you to “try before your buy” and get assistance in deciding which firearm may “fit” you the best. Should you rent a handgun for this course (or any rental); you must purchase the ammunition from RAFTC. Additional, detailed information is available here. (see Section II / III / and IV.)

The Commonwealth of Kentucky has also provided a “fast track” for persons with an EPO (Emergency Protective Order). Further information is available here.

Illinois Concealed Carry (CCDW)

Illinois State certified instructors at RAFTC teach two different courses for the Illinois Concealed Carry permit course. The 16 hour course is for those who do not have prior training. The class is broken up as follows:

  • Part 1 - 8 hours - Lecture on handgun safety, law review, in-home defense and concealed carry issues. (If you have approved prior training you will only have to take parts 2 and 3.)
  • Part 2 - 4 hours - State and Federal law, FOID Card Act, IL Concealed Carry Act
  • Part 3 - 4 hours - Gun handling, holster use, and range qualification

The last 4 hours is classroom and range - you will need a firearm, holster, eye and ear protection, and 100 to 200 rounds of ammunition. The firearm does not have to be the one you plan to carry, but the Illinois State Police say it must be a "concealable" firearm.

Active, Retired, and Honorably Discharged members of the United States Armed Forces shall be considered to have completed 8 hours of the 16 hour training requirement. A copy of the DD214 form is required to prove military service. Certificates from the prior training must be submitted with the Certificate of Completion. (Approved Material and teaching are subject to change at the discretion of the Illinois State CCDW Program authorities).

You will need to bring:

  • At least 30 rounds of ammunition, (required for “qualification”). We suggest at least a box of 100 rounds for this class because RAFTC wants you to succeed. We can spend time and better prepare you if you have enough ammunition. Ammo MUST be Factory grade; reloads are Not Permitted.
  • Hearing and eye protection.
  • A Cleaning Kit that is appropriate for your handgun.
  • A handgun that is in good working order and passes inspection by the certified instructor.

Private Lessons

We offer private lessons for those who prefer a one on one learning environment. Private lessons are catered to your individual skill set. Before the class starts you will meet with an instructor; you will review your goals and desires, then evaluate your current skill sets. We have certified male and female instructors at Range America. Hone your skills, or increase your comfort level and confidence with a firearm. You have the ability to make your private lesson for just yourself, or you may wish to bring a spouse or friend for a slight additional charge. We also can offer “private lessons” for the entire family, see an instructor for details. Off-site lessons for “wing shooting” (Clay Targets) and Rifle at 100 (or more) yards are available.

LEOSA

The Law Enforcement Officer Safety Act (LEOSA) is a federal law enacted in 2004. LEOSA allows special firearms carrying privileges to active and retired officers. Retired officers are welcome to come shoot the qualification course, Monday through Friday, between 9:00am and 5:00pm. Upon successful completion a certified instructor will sign the KSP Form 123 needed for your LEOSA permit. Range America Firearms & Training Center is proud to offer this service to the men and women who protect our communities at NO CHARGE. You must call ahead to make your reservation to make sure that 1) a certified instructor is available and 2) that the Range is available.

NRA Range Safety Officer

The NRA Range Safety Officer (RSO) program was developed in response to the demand for a nationally recognized range safety officer certification. NRA RSO’s are people who possess the knowledge, skills and attitude essential to organizing, conducting and supervising activities and range operations. Lessons covered include the role of the RSO and Range Standard Operating Procedures, Range Inspection and Range Rules, how to conduct a Range Safety Briefing, emergency procedures, gun stoppages, malfunctions and how to clear them. Minimum 8 people per class.

NRA Woman on Target (Handgun)

This 4 hour class is divided into classroom (including safety, how a firearm works, basics of ammunition, aiming a handgun, becoming familiar with the handgun(s) you will shoot in this class and other basics of firearm nomenclature. The Range portion of this class will include live fire on the indoor range and SAFETY! There will be 6 shooting lanes and at least 1 instructor for every 2 students.

We will provide the classroom, certified instructors, hearing protection, eye protection, handguns (primarily .22 caliber pistols and/or revolvers), targets, ammunition and the range time. Minimum 12 people per class

NSSF First Shots | Beginners Class and Introduction to Handguns

Learn about the sport of target shooting using handguns. Firearms safety, education and responsibility will be addressed during this classroom and live-fire event.

First Shots promotes responsible firearm ownership through seminars and hands-on activity. In this course you will learn all you need to know as a first time shooter, or someone interested in shooting. Learn the fundamentals of firearm safety and firearms storage in your home.

  • An educational introduction to the safe and recreational use of firearms
  • A clear understanding of the local requirements for owning and purchasing a firearm
  • An overview of shooting sports opportunities for all levels of interest and other instruction available to a new shooter.

Less Than Lethal Instruction

What You Don’t Say, Can’t Be Used Against You

Part of this course is taught by a licensed KY attorney and former District Court Judge, this class covers the use of deadly force and the serious legal implications that carries. This class will explain when legal force can be justified and how to handle the immediate aftermath. In addition to this class an addition 2 hours will be spent topics including: Fight, flight, or flee - the physiological effects when confronted with a threat. Mindset - the most important weapon is the mind. Preparing your mind is as important if not more important than the time you spend practicing shooting. Students will receive a Range America course certificate of completion. Minimum 8 people per class.

NRA Refuse to be a Victim

This is not a firearms instruction course and does not include instruction in physical combat self-defense. Students will learn common weaknesses that criminals take advantage of, and a variety of corrective measures that are practical, inexpensive and easy to follow. Also includes classroom instruction on criminal psychology, automobile crimes, cyber safety, home security, use of personal safety devices and more. Students receive the NRA Refuse to be a Victim handbook, NRA Refuse to be a Victim brochure, the NRA Refuse to be a Victim Firearms supplement and the NRA Refuse to be a Victim course completion certificate. Minimum 8 people per class.

SABRE Civilian Safety Awareness Program (Pepper Spray)

Students will be exposed to three (3) hours of Safety Awareness, Information, Tips, Skills and Techniques within a private and fun atmosphere. This is a class centered on less than lethal self-defense tactics. Class sizes are limited to no more than twelve (12) students to allow your instructor to critique your performance and provide important feedback. Students will learn risk reduction strategies to help discourage potential threats, how to protect yourself at a safe distance, the best self-defense technique to escape an attacker, how to protect yourself during high stress encounter, and the best techniques to deploy pepper spray safely and effectively.

SABRE College / Campus Safety Program

What the College Safety Program Will Teach You

SABRE's College Safety Program empowers students to make their personal safety a priority during their time on campus.

The program takes knowledge from SABRE's elite law enforcement partners and presents it in the form of practical tips to be incorporated into daily life. Our instructors will address a wide range of scenarios most students will encounter on a regular basis, both on and off campus. Students will learn:

Taser Training

Learn from a Certified, Master Taser Instructor, this course will give you the knowledge, confidence and ability to safely defend yourself with the Taser C-2 or the M-26C. This is the same technology currently used by law enforcement across the country. It allows a civilian to have a less lethal form of self-defense while you attempt to incapacitate your attacker. Because of the cost of the Taser and possible health “risks” (clearance from your doctor, etc.), you will NOT be subjected to experiencing the “shock” from a Taser. Students successfully completing this course will be eligible for a 10% discount on civilian model Tasers Minimum 4 people per class.

ALL Classes with Firearms;

  • DO NOT BRING ANY LIVE Ammunition into the classroom.
  • ALL firearms MUST be Cased or Holstered before entering the building.
  • ALL firearms will be inspected to be in a “safe working condition”.
  • Factory Ammo Only; NO Reloads!
  • IF renting a firearm from RAFTC you MUST Purchase ammo from RAFTC.
  • No Steel Cased Ammo; this includes the projectile (steel case / core / Bi-metal).
  • Each Student MUST SIGN a RAFTC Membership / Waiver before participating in any of these classes.
  • Each and every student MUST watch the Range Etiquette and Safety Video before they are allowed onto the range.
  • Reservations are required for each class with either 1) payment in full or 2) a 50% deposit.
  • There are NO Refunds; however, we will reschedule the student for another date should they not be able to attend the class they sign up for!
  • Any scheduled classes which do not have the minimum amount of students in the call will be rescheduled at a “mutually agreeable” date. Should no date be mutually agreeable, a refund will be granted.
