Range and Safety FAQ's

How do I transport a firearm inside Range America Firearms & Training Center?

All firearms, including long guns, must be unloaded and cased or holstered prior to entering or leaving the premises of Range America, LLC. Law Enforcement Officers, lawful “open carry”, and those with a valid Concealed Carry Deadly Weapons (CCDW) License are exempt from this rule. All firearms must be unloaded (and cased or holstered) prior to leaving the shooting bays of Range America, LLC, d/b/a Range America Firearms & Training Center.

Firearms may be removed from the case or holster once you are safely on the firing line in your shooting bay. Firearms may be removed from the case or holster if you are working with a sales associate, training counselor, or gunsmith staff.

I have never shot before; do I need to take a class?

No, you are not required to take a class. However, we do recommend you take a class if you have no experience. We offer two short classes at Range America Firearms & Training Center - First Steps and First Shots. We always encourage firearm training to enhance proficiency and safety. At Range America Firearms & Training Center, we require every shooter to watch a short gun safety & range etiquette video before using our range.

What do I need to do to shoot on the range?

Welcome to Range America Firearms & Training Center. When you arrive you will be greeted and directed to the Rental Counter for assistance. Please make sure your firearm remains cased!

If it is your first time shooting with us there will be a couple of forms you will need to complete (Guest & Membership Application and Waiver, along with Range Rules and Acknowledgment) and then watch a short video regarding range etiquette and safety. When you are finished with these two tasks, please take your paperwork to the Rental Counter and you will be checked in. A valid government photo ID is required. If you rent a firearm, you will need a valid government photo ID, along with a credit card that will be held and returned to you when you return the firearm. Range staff will assign you a lane, check your firearm and ammunition, and ensure you have proper eye and ear protection. You can purchase ammunition, targets, eye protection and ear protection at the Rental Counter, if needed.

How large is the range?

We have 12 lanes – two bays with six lanes each. Six lanes are dedicated to handgun use only. The remaining six lanes, shooters may use riffles, handguns or shotguns. All lanes have a maximum shooting distance of 75 feet.

Is the range heated and or cooled?

Yes; both bays are heated (in winter) and air-conditioned (in summer months). Further, the range has a state-of-the-art ventilation system which uses HEPA air filtration designed to remove lead, smoke, and other particulates from the air in the range.

Does Range America Firearms & Training Center offer membership(s)?

Yes. We have a selection of different types of memberships. Please see our web site for full details and pricing. Annual memberships are available for an individual, family, corporate entity or charter member, each offering different privileges. A strong benefit of membership is the ability to make reservations!

Can non-members use the range?

Yes, guests are welcome at Range America Firearms & Training Center. The non-member rate is $19.00 per one hour session for the first shooter and you receive one free target. You can have one additional shooter (on the same lane). The additional shooter sharing the lane will be charged a fee of $7.00 per one hour session. There is a limit of two shooters per lane. Reservations are not available to non-member guests.

What calibers are allowed at the range?

In the handgun bay calibers up to and including .50AE are allowed. In the rifle, shotgun, handgun bay any caliber up to, but not including, the 50BMG is allowed. Armor piercing, penetrating, green tip, tracer or incendiary rounds of any kind are prohibited on the shooting range. No steel core or steel jacketed ammunition is allowed. Bi-metal projectiles (common in imported ammunition), tracers, incendiary, and explosive rounds are not permitted. Shotguns may be shot at the range using (lead) slugs or (lead) buckshot only.

Can I shoot a Muzzleloader or other Black Powder Firearm?

No. Because of fire and safety hazards created by unburned powder, black powder, black powder substitutes, and smokeless powder substitutes, are not allowed on the range.

Do you have rental guns?

Yes, Range America Firearms & Training Center offers a large selection of handguns, and some long guns (rifle and shotgun)! Additionally, full automatic machine guns and suppressors are available to rent. All rentals require ammunition purchased at Range America Firearms & Training Center. You will be required to present a valid government photo ID, along with a credit card that will be held until you return the firearm. The great news is you can often “try before you buy” and you can switch amongst different rental firearms at no additional fee (except for the ammunition, if you change calibers).

Does the range allow outside ammunition, and if so are there any restrictions on ammunition?

Yes, at Range America Firearms & Training Center you may use factory loaded ammunition recommended for the firearm. Rental firearms must use ammunition purchased at Range America Firearms & Training Center. However, armor piercing, penetrating, green tip, tracer or incendiary rounds of any kind are prohibited on the shooting range. Furthermore, steel core or steel jacketed ammunition, or any projectile to which a magnet will stick is not permitted. Shotguns must use buckshot or lead slugs only. Due to insurance and safety reasons, we cannot allow reloaded ammunition to be fired on the range.

Is there a time limit on the range?

Yes. Lane times are allocated in one hour increments. If there are other shooters waiting for a lane, at the end of the one hour rental time you must clear the lane. If you would like to continue to shoot, you may request additional range time and you will be place in line with other patrons waiting for a lane. Guests will be required to pay for the additional range time.

If there are no shooters waiting, you are more than welcome to stay longer than the one hour by purchasing additional time. Please explain your intentions to the Range Safety Officer (RSO). If you are a member the RSO will reset your one hour clock and you can continue shooting. If you are not a member, the RSO will instruct you on how to pay for the additional range time.

What type of target system does the range use?

Range America Firearms & Training Center features automatic target retrievers manufactured by Action Target. Our target system is FAST, running at 7 feet per second, and will position the target within one inch of the distance you program into the controller! This allows you to shoot at exact known distances to help with ballistics and precise shot placements. On the multi-use bays, the targets are capable of turning 360 degrees with the random edging target turning mechanism.

What type of safety features does the range have?

Range America Firearms & Training Center has been designed with safety as the number one priority. The backstop (bullet stop) of our range is capable of stopping up to a .50 BMG round and every high-power rifle of a lesser caliber. Range America Firearms & Training Center strictly prohibits the use of 50BMG ammunition, steel core, steel jacketed and armor piercing (AP) ammunition.

We have concrete-filled masonry walls with clear ballistic glass on the top half of our shooting booths. Additionally, the observation “viewing windows” from the retail area and classroom feature ballistic glass. We have installed a state-of-the-art ventilation system using HEPA air filtration. The air filtration system was designed to remove lead, smoke, and other potentially harmful vapors from the air.

Can minors shoot at the range?

Yes, minors are welcome and are the future of our sport! However, youth shooters must be nine (9) years of age or above, and must abide by all range rules. All shooters under the age of 18 will need a parent or guardian or authorized third party adult present in order to shoot. All shooters under the age of 18 must have a “parental consent” form signed at Range America Firearms & Training Center. For the safety of all persons, the parent, guardian or authorized adult must supervise the activities of the minor while at the range.

If you bring a minor for whom you are not the parent or legal guardian (for example your child and your child’s “best friend”), their parent or legal guardian of the other child is required to come to Range America Firearms & Training Center to sign the necessary consent authorization and liability forms in order for the minor to be allowed to shoot. This form is available for download on our web site.

Persons 18 or older and under the age of 21, are allowed to shoot a rifle or shotgun on the range. Consistent with the opinion of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, if you are 18 years of age or older, but under the age of 21, you may rent a handgun and ammunition at a special price; however you are prohibited from leaving the facility with handgun ammunition. Before leaving Range America Firearms & Training Center, you must either: 1) shoot all rounds, or 2) surrender the rounds before you leave the range premises. Persons under 21 years of age cannot legally purchase handgun ammunition (except under this limited exception for shooting at a range).

Does your range support physically handicapped shooters?

Yes! Four of our twelve lanes are 60” in width, as is the ADA requirement.

How many shooters are allowed on a lane?

Two shooters are permitted on a lane at the same time and we offer a reduced fee for the second shooter. Only one person may shoot in the lane at a single time. The exception to this rule is during a Range America Firearms & Training Center class taught by one of our certified instructors.

Do I need an ID card to shoot at the Range?

Yes. When you check in at Range America Firearms & Training Center you will be required to present a valid government photo ID in order to shoot. If you are renting a firearm, we will hold your credit card and ID until you return the rental firearm.

Can I shoot my full auto or suppressed firearm at the range?

Yes, so long as you present your Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives paperwork (proof of ownership / tax stamp). Please remember for everyone’s safety, you will be under the direction of the Range Safety Officer.

Can I bring my own targets to shoot at?

Yes, you may bring your own “regulation targets” to Range America Firearms & Training Center. The Range Safety Officer and Range Staff reserve the right to prohibit targets that are deemed to be offensive or unsafe. The regulation targets must be appropriately sized and at eye level to ensure that the projectiles will enter the bullet trap.

Can I practice drawing from a holster at the range?

No, unless this technique is taught by a certified instruction in a class offered at Range America Firearms & Training Center. Shoulder holsters are not allowed on the range. Almost all shoulder holsters operate like crossdraw holsters, meaning that during the drawstroke, the gun at some point will be held horizontally and pointed straight away from the side of the shooter.

Retail FAQ's

Do you buy and sell used firearms?

Yes, Range America Firearms & Training Center does buy and sell used handguns and long guns. We also accept trade-ins on new firearms and other gear.

Do you special order firearms?

Yes, Range America Firearms & Training Center would be happy to special order firearms if we don't have what you are looking for. There are no refunds for special order items. However, we will issue you a store credit (the exception to this would be the supplier taking too long to ship the item and we cancel the order at your request).

NOTE: Some special order items have a no refund & no store credit policy. These would include any rare items that could not be easily resold, or any firearm that is customized or custom built. There is a no refund & no store credit policy on firearms or ammunition once they have been sold.

Do you do firearm or NFA transfers?

Yes, firearm and National Firearms Act (NFA) transfers are available at Range America Firearms & Training Center. The fee for a single firearm transfer is $15.00 for members and $25.00 for non-members. NFA transfers are $100 per firearm. We ask all customers to fill out our Federal Firearms Licensees (FFL) “Firearm Transfer Form” before having an item shipped to our facility. This will allow us to send the FFL form to the dealer transferring your firearm.

Do you offer lay-away for firearms?

Yes, with a 20% deposit Range America Firearms & Training Center can hold your firearm for up to 90 days. There are no refunds on lay-away items, however we do issue store credit.

Do you offer gunsmith services?

Yes, Range America Firearms & Training Center has certified armorer and gunsmith services. We also offer ultra-sonic firearms cleaning and bore sighting services.

Do you sell gift cards?

Yes, gift cards are available in any denomination and can be used for training, memberships, range time, and retail sales at Range America Firearms & Training Center.

Do you offer on-line/web-based sales?

Not at this time.

Do you offer a military or law enforcement discount?

Yes. Range America Firearms & Training Center offers a 10% discount for all non-sale items, excluding firearms, ammunition and gun safes. Additionally, a $50.00 discount is offered for annual memberships. Thank you for your service!

Instruction / Teaching FAQ’s

Do you offer handgun carry permit classes?

Yes, Carry Conceal Deadly Weapon (CCDW) classes for Kentucky and Illinois are offered at Range America Firearms & Training Center. We also offer a basic First Shots class and a First Steps class to help new, inexperienced shooters who would like to take the CCDW class.

What other classes are available?

Range America Firearms & Training Center offers most NRA classes for Rifle / Pistol / Shotgun Basic and Advanced Training. We offer private one-on-one lessons and private two-on-one lessons for most disciplines of firearm shooting. Other classes offered at Range America Firearms & Training Center include: 1. Refuse to Be a Victim; 2. Personal Protection in the Home; 3. Personal Protection Outside the Home; and 4. Defensive Pistol. Please see the full list of classes on our web site or in the training brochures at the range.

Are your instructors certified?

Yes, all instructors at Range America Firearms & Training Center are certified by one or more of the following: National Rifle Association (NRA), Commonwealth of Kentucky for Concealed Carry Deadly Weapon (CCDW), State of Illinois CCDW, and/or the National Sporting Clays Association (NSCA) {for Wing Shooting ~ Trap / Skeet / Sporting Clays}. Additionally, there are various certifications for Police/ Law Enforcement Officer classes and Taser certification.

I have never shot before. Do I need to take a class?

You do not need prior formal instruction in order to shoot at our range, however we strongly encourage it. We do require all first time visitors to watch a short video about gun safety and range etiquette before using our range facilities. Range America Firearms & Training Center offers private instruction and a wide variety of classes for everyone from beginners to veteran shooters. We always encourage firearm training to enhance proficiency and safety. Our First Steps or First Shots class may be your solution.

General FAQ’s

Can I transfer my membership to someone else or let someone use mine?

No. Memberships are non-transferable and only usable by the named member.

How do reservations for the range work?

Reservations are offered for members only (and for Range America Firearms & Training Center classes which require range time). We cannot reserve lanes in advance for non-members.

For reservations, we require a 24-hour advanced notice. Each member may reserve a maximum of one lane. Lane reservations will be held for 10 minutes. If you do not show after the 10 minute allotment, the lane will be released to the next shooter in line. Reservations are subject to availability and are not taken on holidays or event weekends.

Am I allowed to take pictures or videos?

Use of cellular phones for purposes of texting or taking pictures is prohibited, as these activities may cause a distraction to other shooters. Please remember that our entire facility (except the inside of the restrooms) is under 24-hour recorded video protection.

Do you have a dress code?

Yes. For your safety, flip-flops, sandals or open footwear of any kind are prohibited. Because brass ejected from a firearm is very hot, tank tops, muscle shirts, low-cut tops, undergarments worn as outer garments, are prohibited. Articles of clothing and/or jewelry which could become entangled in a firearm are prohibited. Such items include, but are not limited to, torn or ragged clothing, extremes in apparel or jewelry, lanyards, large chains, and similar items. Clothing or jewelry displaying drugs, obscenities, lewd or illegal behavior, sexual overtones and other references which may be disruptive to shooters are prohibited.
